Although Ben Tate looked to be an intriguing option after his Week 13 performance of 102 rushing yards with three touchdowns, his season was shut down today after he was place on injury reserve. Some sources have said Tate broke a fifth rib, but Tate denied that saying his newest ailment was just a rib re-injury. Either way, his season is done.
While not really doing anything of significance for fantasy owners this season, Tate is currently ranked as the 26th best fantasy football running back in standard scoring leagues, and he will be a free agent after this season. It will be interesting to see if a change of atmosphere would do Tate some good, but there will probably be few teams who would want Tate as their main running back.
His backup, Dennis Johnson, is currently only owned in less than 1% of ESPN leagues, so it does not appear that Tate owners are running out to pick him up. With teams sitting their studs in Week 17, Johnson could be a sneaky play if your usual running backs are set make the playoffs and see a decreased workload. The Texans have nothing to loose, so much like the Redskins parading Kirk Cousins around, Johnson should be unleashed to face the Titans 23rd run defense in Week 17.
Do not get lazy because you made the playoffs. Continue to add depth to your roster, and look for guys like Johnson in Week 17.
