Carlos Hyde Has Concussion in Preseason Game

On  Aug. 26, running back Carlos Hyde suffered a concussion against the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Rotoworld, Hyde has 15 days to receive clearance to play in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Hyde. Even though he’s just 24,  he’s never completed a 16-game season. The offense for the 49ers has also been erratic over the past two seasons, and it hasn’t been a stable environment for Hyde.

Last season, the 49ers scored the fewest points per game (14.9 average) but allowed the 18th-most points per game. When a team is behind, it is forced to throw the ball more and limits the effectiveness of the running backs.

So with injuries and an ineffective offense, I haven’t targeted Hyde.

But this season, I rolled the dice on him in one of my Fantasy Championship drafts.

Chip Kelly lost a lot of trust last year, but it’s important to review the running back position as a whole during his time in Philadelphia.

Player Year Rushing Yards Total TDs Receptions Receiving Yards
LeSean McCoy 2013 1,607 11 52 539
LeSean McCoy 2014 1,319 5 28 155

And even though there wasn’t a bell cow Fantasy back in Philly last year, the backs as a whole put up solid numbers.

DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews, & Darren Sproles combined stats:

Rushing Yards: 1,558

Rushing Touchdowns: 15

Receptions: 119

Receiving Yards: 856

Touchdown Receptions: 3

I also like the fact Hyde is cheaper this year. I saw Hyde being drafted in the beginning of Round 3 in a lot of drafts, but this year I was able to draft him at the end of Round 4.

But if you are only doing one draft this year, I would recommend looking at other options. You don’t want to have to rely on Hyde too heavily. If he disappoints you, you have to have really strong depth behind him to fill in as your RB2, or even RB1 if you ware waiting on drafting backs.

For this draft, I have decent depth with Jonathan Stewart, Isaiah Crowell, and Christine Michael. But Stewart hasn’t played a 16-game season since 2011, Crowell has limited Fantasy upside in PPR leagues because of Duke Johnson, and Michael has to fight Thomas Rawls and C.J. Prosise for touches.

However, I have five teams in this contest, so I was comfortable diversifying my roster. If everything goes right for Hyde and he’s a bell cow, he has a lot of upside.
